Rendez-vous with French cinema
Avant-Garde is extremely proud to have participated in the amazing 2018 edition of Rendez Vous With French Cinema, an event jointly organized by UniFrance and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The Festival ended on March 18th after 10 days of screenings with a ticket-sales record as 9100 tickets were sold throughout the festival.
The 23rd edition took place from March 8th to March 18th, in the presence of 18 French artists who came to present the 24 films selected by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
The festival placed specific emphasis on youth this year, initiating an unlimited MoviePass. Student All Access passes and the inauguration of the “Salut les jeunes!” (hello youth) day, with reduced rate tickets for under 40-year olds. The Salut Les Jeunes critics film review competition for under 40s was a success with the winner, Amy Chabassier, who gave an amazing review of Ava by the young director Léa Mysius. The review earned him a return trip to Paris and a few cases of champagne.
We should also note the 600 students who came to see Orchestra Class by Rachid Hami, who joined each of the screenings to answer all the questions that audiences never failed to ask.
Activations were done throughout the city with 6 master classes organized in different universities and institutions (Fordham Univeristy, School of Visual Arts, NYU, Anthology Film Archive).
The Metrograph took advantage of the festival to present a selection of films starring Vincent Macaigne, Mathieu Amalric and Jeanne Balibar. A connection was established with the New York International Children’s Film Festival, which takes place between March and April, and which showed 5 French features and 13 shorts this year, in the presence in particular of Benjamin Renner
Lastly, Avant-Garde and Unifrance partnered with Soho House in the spirit of rejuvenating the festival to showcase our personal favorite: Ava by Lea Mysius in the Soho House’s gorgeous cinema room which was followed by a Q&A with producer Jean-Louis Livi !
We hope to see you there next year.
